Freedom

After one day back in shoes because of the miserable rainy weather and my paranoia about slipping on those steps, I already notice the difference in my feet, a kind of prickling on the underside of my heels.

Meanwhile, I’ve been checking out the myth and hype surrounding Nike Frees - ‘ a shoe that lets your foot run free on any surface.’

Except that their own video clip shows a runner landing on his heel, which wouldn’t happen running barefoot (not even walking barefoot). There are many reviews out there - but to get one perspective on how they really compare with running barefoot, Ken Bob Saxton, who’s been running barefoot for 25 years tried them out.

The branding of the shoe will do much to ensure their popularity, but for people who think outside the flock, barefoot running really is free.

A small slip

On Thursday, coming home from the supermarket in the rain, I lost my footing going down a slippery flight of steps outside my front door. I fell from top to bottom and have some spectacular bumps and bruises that will put me out of action for a while. I just hope it will have healed in time for my holiday - an 8 day climb/trek over glaciers around the Matterhorn.

The backpack full of groceries probably did cushion my fall - as my neighbour remarked, it was lucky I had it on. And it’s lucky that my feet and ankles were untouched by the accident.

Not so lucky that I was carrying a 6 pack of beer - two of the bottles broke and the beer and glass got everywhere before I was able to get inside and clean it up.

Luckily my phone and mp3 player were in the outside pocket and weren’t affected.

I wasn’t so lucky with my digital camera - it’s still drying out.

My rucksack is still full of glass shards, my diary smells like a brewery and who knows what the effect will be on my bank cards.

The stupid thing is that I was wearing slick-soled flip-flops because they combine well with my program of going barefoot as much as I can. While I was falling, one thought went through my mind - this wouldn’t have happened if I was barefoot.
